Internal Family Systems Therapy: Meeting Your Inner World with Compassion

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a transformative, evidence-based approach to therapy that helps people understand and heal the different "parts" within them. Instead of viewing yourself as one singular identity, IFS sees the mind as made up of sub-personalities—inner parts that all have different roles, emotions, and histories. At our North Sydney therapy space, we use IFS to help individuals and couples move from inner conflict toward greater self-leadership and harmony.

What Are “Parts” in IFS?

Each of us holds multiple parts. These may include:

  • Protectors – parts that try to prevent pain (e.g., perfectionism, people-pleasing, shutting down)

  • Exiles – parts that carry unresolved wounds, shame, or unmet needs

  • Firefighters – parts that distract or numb (e.g., addiction, overworking)

And then there's the Self—a calm, compassionate inner presence that can lead healing.

In therapy, we get to know these parts, understand their intentions, and help them feel seen, safe, and supported.

How IFS Helps Individuals

IFS allows you to:

  • Develop inner compassion instead of shame or blame

  • Understand recurring behaviors or emotional reactions

  • Heal childhood wounds by listening to the parts that still carry them

  • Create more balance, peace, and confidence within yourself
