What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session

Starting therapy can bring up all sorts of emotions—hope, anxiety, doubt, relief. If you've never been before, it's normal to wonder: What actually happens in a first session?

At our North Sydney therapy space, we meet you with warmth and curiosity, not judgment. Here's what you can generally expect.

First, You Set the Pace

The first session is about getting to know each other. We’ll explore:

  • What brought you to therapy

  • What’s been feeling hard or stuck

  • Your hopes for change

  • Any past therapy experiences (good or bad)

There’s no pressure to tell your whole story in one go. We go as slowly or as quickly as feels right for you.

We'll Explain How We Work

We’ll walk you through:

  • Our therapeutic approach (whether it’s somatic, IFS, EFT, or integrative)

  • Confidentiality and boundaries

  • How often we might meet and for how long

You’ll have space to ask questions and share any concerns you have about therapy itself.

It’s Okay to Feel Unsure

Many people leave the first session feeling a mix of emotions—some clarity, some vulnerability. That’s completely normal. Therapy is a relationship, and it takes time to build trust. The first session is just a beginning.

For Couples: What the First Session Looks Like

In couples therapy, the first session often involves:

  • Naming the current challenges you’re facing

  • Exploring each person’s experience of the relationship

  • Beginning to map out patterns of interaction

Our role is to hold space for both partners equally, to slow things down, and to make sure each voice is heard without blame. We help lay the groundwork for deeper work ahead.
