What to Expect in Your First Individual Therapy Session

Starting therapy takes courage. Even when you have been thinking about it for a while, that first step of actually booking a session and walking through the door can feel significant.

One of the things that makes it easier is knowing what to expect. So here is an honest, plain guide to what individual therapy at The Embodied Mind Collective actually looks like, from your first discovery call through to the ongoing work.

Before Your First Session: The Discovery Call

Every therapeutic relationship at The Embodied Mind Collective begins with a free 15-minute discovery call.

This is not a therapy session. It is simply a conversation. A chance for you to ask questions, get a sense of the therapist's approach, and share a little about what has brought you to seek support. There is no pressure and no obligation. If after talking it does not feel like the right fit, we will say so honestly, and if we can point you somewhere better suited to your needs, we will.

Most people find that even this brief conversation gives them a clearer sense of whether they want to proceed.

Your First Session

The first session is an assessment, though it does not feel like one in the clinical sense. It feels more like a thoughtful, open conversation.

Your therapist will want to understand a few things:

What has brought you to therapy at this particular moment.

A sense of your history and the broader context of your life.

What you are hoping for from the process.

What you have already tried, and what has helped or not helped in the past.

You do not need to come with a prepared speech or a clear sense of what your goals are. Many people arrive feeling uncertain or hard to articulate. That is completely fine. Part of what therapy offers is a space to discover what you are actually carrying, which is often different from what you thought you came in with.

Your therapist will also share their sense of how they might work with you, and what the process might look like. By the end of the first session you should have a clearer picture of whether this feels like the right fit and whether you want to continue.

The Somatic Dimension

At The Embodied Mind Collective, our individual therapy includes a somatic dimension, which means we pay attention to what is happening in your body alongside what you are saying.

You might notice your therapist gently drawing your attention to physical sensations as they arise. The tightening in your chest as you speak about something difficult. The way your breath changes when a particular memory comes up. The physical quality of an emotion before it has a name.

This is not unusual or strange. It is simply a more complete way of being present with your experience. Many people find that this dimension of the work opens something that talk alone cannot quite reach.

What Sessions Feel Like Over Time

Therapy at The Embodied Mind Collective is typically weekly, at least in the early stages, though this varies depending on your needs and circumstances.

Each session is 50 minutes. Sessions do not follow a fixed script. What gets worked with each week emerges from what is alive for you, what is happening in your life right now, and what the therapeutic process is opening up.

Some sessions feel productive and clear. Others feel harder to articulate but are doing important work underneath. Both are part of the process.

You are always in the driver's seat. Your therapist's role is to walk alongside you with skill and presence, not to direct you towards a predetermined destination.

How Long Does Individual Therapy Take?

This is one of the most common questions people ask, and the honest answer is that it varies.

Some people find significant relief and clarity within a few months. Others choose to work for longer, using therapy as an ongoing space for growth and deepening rather than crisis management.

What tends to matter most is not the number of sessions but the quality of engagement. People who bring genuine openness and willingness to sit with what is uncomfortable tend to move more quickly and more deeply than those who come looking for a quick fix.

If you are unsure what kind of commitment is right for you, the best approach is simply to begin and see how it unfolds. You can always reassess as you go.

Common Questions

You do not need to be in crisis to come to therapy. Many of our clients are functioning well in their lives and simply want to understand themselves more deeply, relate more skillfully, or build a stronger foundation for the life they want to live.

You do not need to know what to talk about. Your therapist will help you find your way in.

You do not need to have done therapy before. And if you have, the experience here may be different from what you have encountered previously.

You should feel safe and respected from the very first conversation. If at any point that is not the case, please say so. A good therapeutic relationship is built on honesty.

Individual Therapy and Couples Work

Many people who come to us for individual therapy find that the work naturally touches their relationship too. Understanding your own patterns, your nervous system responses, and your attachment history often changes the way you show up with a partner.

Some of our individual therapy clients also engage in couples therapy at some point, either alongside individual work or after. If you are curious about whether couples therapy might be helpful in addition to individual work, we are happy to talk that through.
